Selsey 2 Roffey 3
Once again it seemed that the elements would put pay to our football for another week, but credit to Selsey ground staff, the playing surface was perfect although with heavy rain in the lead up to kick off we knew it would deteriorate as the afternoon progressed.
Roffey started brightly and with debuts being handed to Mackie Ringrose and Josh Neathey, both only 17 it was clear their injection of youthful energy was going to benefit Roffey. With a few early chances for both teams but nothing of note it looked to be a midfield battle that was going to unlock this game, Tilley and Piller working alongside Jeal it was Roffey who started to look the brighter as the half wore on, particularly down the left with Ringrose delivering ball after ball into the box with the spiritedly Simester overlapping when his legs allowed him. It was indeed from the left that the deadlock was broken, a cross was swept in and in tricky conditions seemed to skid up and hit the Selsey defenders hand resulting in a penalty, which the prolific o Sullivan dispatched confidently. We headed into half time 1 up, with the rain still lashing down we knew the next goal was crucial and after good work from Neathey down the left it was that man again O’Sullivan who swept home to double our lead. With conditions now markedly worse tackles were flying about all over the place on the slippery pitch and it wasn’t long before one such tackle was mistimed and a Selsey player was sent off. This only seemed to spur Selsey on and within 15 minutes they were level through two set pieces ! With Roffey still in shock at letting a two goal lead slip there looked to be only one winner, but the impressive Tilley continued to show glimpses of real quality in the centre of the park and Roffey once again took hold of the midfield battle. With time running out a lofted ball from S
imester was met by substitute Wragg who got to the bye line and pulled it back to Tilley who made no mistake as he fired it into the top corner to crown a fantastic Mom performance for Tilley and seal the 3 points for Roffey. All in all in tricky conditions a fantastic 3 points on the road against a good opposition.
