FIRST TEAM

With our late appeal hearing regarding promotion it was mid may before we knew that our promotion to senior football was successful, we set about making the necessary addition to the squad to be able to compete in Div. 1 and with the addition of two coaches we begun preseason, the usual merry go round of players ensued and our pre season friendlies generally went well.

We begun the season at home to Selsey in a real baptism of fire losing comprehensively 6-1 on the day, I have to say with a few mitigating circumstances but soundly beaten none the less.

As the season wore on our inconsistency in personnel mirrored our inconsistency on the pitch as a good win was usually met by a defeat the following week and so the season seem to be heading that way. I guess in the early stages the highlights were the the comfortable Sussex Senior Cup win against Billingshurst that led to us being drawn away at Eastbourne Borough, a great experience for the lads and testament to the clubs progress despite losing on the night. A real turning point for me was around Christmas when we changed some personnel for the better, adding Gareth Neathey as 1st team coach and adding some young blood to the squad, back to back  away wins at Storrington,  Billingshurst, and Oakwood pushed us firmly into mid table before COVID-19 took over and the season was effectively Null and Void.

All in All, I was happy with the progress throughout the season, and a respectable mid table finish looked likely had we continued.

Certainly in 2020/21 we will be looking for a more settled structure in terms of players and will be looking to gather together those from last season along with some quality additions to make up a competitive 18/20 man 1st team squad.

My aims for 2020/21 would be first and foremost to continue to  sustain the club at senior level, then see some progression in terms of league positions year on year, our eyes would be firmly set on a top 6 finish if we can get the right character of players signed. I firmly believe at this level its not exclusively  about player ability, its about players character, desire, willingness to be apart of something and team spirit, if we can get the right characters in, then I fully expect us to compete in the top half of the table.

let’s hope it won’t be long until the COVID-19 gets its marching orders and sees red so the rest of us can get on with preseason, and head into the 2020/21 campaign.

Have a great summer and stay safe.
